The Lesce Sports Airfield will host the FAI Sailplane Grand Prix, which is a qualification event for the world championship.
The Lesce Aeroklub is delighted to announce that it is hosting a FAI Sailplane Grand Prix qualification competition. Between 30th June and 6th July 2024, an international competition will take place at Lesce Sports Airfield featuring strong competition among the best glider pilots.
The Sailplane Grand Prix is comparable to Formula 1 in the world of gliding. The competition features the highest-ranked pilots in the international FAI rankings, who will compete using the most advanced gliders. Twenty of the best pilots will compete in daily tasks, determined according to the weather conditionins, using thermals and wind to find the optimal lines for victory over the peaks of the Karavanke mountains, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, the Julian Alps, the Carnic Alps and the Dolomites. Daily tasks usually last two to three hours and the winner is the pilot who completes the assigned task the fastest. A special feature of the competition is the regatta start, where the planes cross the starting line at the same time, which creates a spectacular scene for spectators. The winner with the highest overall total will qualify for the final in St. Auban in France.
